Winter Tires Vs. Winter Tire & Wheel Package

By now we've all heard the proverbial "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes" muttered at least once by a family member/friend/co-worker/random in Calgary. As stale as that statement is it does jive with our funky weather patterns that for an increasing number of people results in needing a set of summer or all-season tires for three seasons and a set of winter tires (possibly on a second set of wheels). Vehicle owners that use winter tires are faced with the dilemma of using either one set of wheels and having the appropriate tire mounted and balance every season or purchasing a 2nd set of wheels and tires.

We recommend using wheel and tire packages for most applications, below is a breakdown the advantages vs. only using winter tires.

Winter Wheel and Tire Package

Advantages:

  • Season wheel/tire changes cost less than a full mount and balance. Over time the cost savings are significant

  • For some vehicles alternate smaller wheel and tire sizing options can save you money and provide a more comfortable ride

  • Saves wear on expensive factory wheels

Disadvantages:

  • More initial expense

  • Extra weight of wheels makes them harder to handle than unmounted tires

  • Less desirable for a vehicle on a short-term lease

We can see in the table below that in the long-run, having two sets of wheels and tires has some long-term pay-offs financially and functionally.

Seasonal Tire Storage

Vehicle owners that use two sets of tires or a winter package can take advantage of Spec R Motorsport seasonal storage. Use us to help;

  • Save space at your home

  • Save your body from injury by not having to lift the tires in and out of your vehicle and home

  • Keep your clothing clean (used tires and wheels are dirty)

  • Peace of mind
